Organizations worldwide worked to end apartheid, the system of government- sponsored racism in Southern and South Africa. Chicago was active in anti-apartheid efforts, passing sanctions against and divesting holdings from South Africa primarily through the efforts of local social justice, religious, activist groups.

"Africans are never alone somehow you get to find people - we find each other... as soon as I got here I found a lot
sophisticated activists who knew sometimes a lot about South Africa. Things I didn’t even know because of censorship."
