Course Reserves
Reserve Readings For Faculty

Turnaround time

Reserve requests should be submitted as early as possible.

Items with a status of 'Available': Please allow up to 2 weeks for processing.

Items that are currently checked out, missing, lost, or need to be ordered: Please allow 3-6 weeks.

Requests will be processed in the order they are received.

Personal Copies

Personal copies may be placed on reserve until the Library copy arrives or becomes available. Please see Restrictions below for exceptions concerning personal copies of visual and audio multi-media.

All personal copies should be submitted with a completed Print Reserves Form and have the name of the instructor and his/her department on the inside cover. These items will be given a barcode and added to the reserve list. The Library is not responsible for the wear and tear that happens to items while on reserve.

All personal copies will be returned to the instructor at the end of the semester.

AV Materials

AV materials may be placed on course reserve at the 5th floor AV Circulation Desk for a maximum of one week. Use the Print Reserve Request Form to reserve the item for your class. Be sure to indicate which week you would like the item to be available.

Reusing Materials

Reserves are not carried over from semester to semester. If you wish to reuse an item you had on reserve during a prior semester, you will need to submit a new Print Reserves Form for the current semester.

Restrictions

  • Required readings only. The space available for housing the print reserve collection is limited. Please do not place optional/recommended readings on reserve.
  • No more than one copy. Only one copy of a title will be put on reserve for a course.
  • Periodicals, Reference books and Special Collections materials. Titles from these collections may be included in your course reserves list. However, these titles will not be held in the print reserve collection since they are already non-circulating.
  • Course packets. Course packets cannot be placed on reserve. Copyright regulations forbid placing course packets or photocopied anthologies on reserve.
  • Books from other libraries. Materials from other libraries will not be placed on reserve. Titles needed for reserve that are not in our collection will be ordered for you. Please allow additional time for these requests to be processed.
  • Photocopies. The Library no longer maintains a print reserve photocopy file. You may, however, be able place photocopies on E-Reserve.
  • Personal copies of visual multi-media. The following parameters govern personal copies of visual multi-media:
    • Off-air broadcasts may only be placed on reserve during the first 10 consecutive school days after the initial broadcast. The date, time, and network the program aired must be submitted with the material.
    • Excerpts from a copyrighted videocassette may be placed on reserve as long as it amounts to no more then 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less.
    • A single copy of student performances may be placed on reserve for evaluation or rehearsal purposes.
    • Guest lecturers or others who are not enrolled in the class must sign a permission waiver to be videotaped. A copy of this waiver must accompany the tape to be placed on reserve.
  • Personal copies of audio multi-media. The following parameters govern personal copies of audio multi-media:
    • For academic purposes other than performance, excerpts of scores may be placed on reserve as long as the part does not constitute a performable unit, i.e. a movement or an aria, and in no case may it be more than 10% of the whole.
    • Excerpts of copyrighted sound recordings, including lyrics and music videos, may be placed on reserve up to 10% or 30 seconds whichever is less.
    • A single copy of student performances may be placed on reserve for evaluation or rehearsal purposes.

Confirmation

The Library will send you an email when your request has been processed. You will also be notified at this time if the Library was unable to fulfill any of your requests.

Accessing Your Print Reserves

Students may view a list of your current print reserve materials through the Library catalog.

Print reserves are located behind the 1st floor Circulation Desk. Students may check out reserve items by bringing the call number for an item and their Columbia College Chicago ID card to the 1st floor desk.

Print reserve items are Library Use Only, which means students may not take them outside the building. Photocopiers are available on the 1st, 2nd and 4th floors.
